About the workshops

Following the successful implementation of 10 workshops on the theme of Managing the Integration of Culture into Development Programmes, held during 2002-2005, SEAMEO-SPAFA, with the support of the ASEAN Foundation, will now offer this type of workshop with a focus on youths in Southeast Asia. The rationale for this is based upon the growing consensus that investment in young people in developing countries is critical for the future because it does not only benefit that group but the whole of society as well, bringing with it economic returns, peace and human security.

Building on the experience of SEAMEO SPAFA in development education, and in particular the Culture & Development initiative, these workshops adopt a wide range of participatory teaching /learning methodologies, including discussion, debate, research, role play, and field trips. These engage the participant while at the same time:
equip them with knowledge
build an understanding of complex global issues and concerns
encourage the development of critical thinking skills
teach respect and cooperation

‘Youth-friendly’ teaching materials that are creative and original in design will be used. The use of clear language and ‘hands-on’ inter-active methodologies will help de-mystify current culture and development discourse and help encourage full participation by maintaining ‘comfort zone’ levels.
