Day 1
Culture in Projects: Meanings, Understandings, & Problems
Focus on the meanings of culture and our understanding and interpretations of them. How ‘cultural mapping’ can help to raise awareness of the values and behaviours within a culture/sub-cultures.
Day 2
Development: Meanings, Understandings, & Tools
An exploration of our impressions of what development is, could be, or should be. How ‘tools’ can help ensure the identification and thus involvement of all the potential stakeholders in any given development initiative.
Day 3
On-site Field Project Study Excursion: Seeing Development in Action
For these case study research assignments participants will visit a particular project site or town area under development and evaluate the merits/shortfalls of what they see. Using a question worksheet as a guide they will consider issues, such as, the decision-making process and those involved; who benefits and how; signs of conflict; the likely sustainability of the project under review etc.
Day 4
Representation, Interpretation, & Communication; Mediating for Resolution
Focus on testing our attitudes, assumptions, and perceptions with activities that help us to communicate ideas and opinions more effectively. How representing and expressing one’s values and beliefs, whilst at the same time, understanding and respecting differing attitudes and behaviours, is essential to successful relationship-building. Approaching possible situations of conflict by adopting mediation strategies that could effect lasting resolutions.
Day 5
Presentations on Case Studies and Workshop Review
Report on Seeing Development in Action case studies with particular reference to whether young people were involved and to what extent; and if not, suggestions on how young people could be engaged and recommendations for overall project improvement.
