Six Workshops on Youth, Culture, and Development

Following the successful implementation of 10 workshops on the theme of Managing the Integration of Culture into Development Programmes, held during 2002-2005, SEAMEO-SPAFA, with the support of the ASEAN Foundation, will now offer this type of workshop with a focus on youths in Southeast Asia. The rationale for this is based upon the growing consensus that investment in young people in developing countries is critical for the future because it does not only benefit that group but the whole of society as well, bringing with it economic returns, peace and human security.
Young persons aged between 18-25 years from the 10 ASEAN Member Countries are invited to apply for the workshops. Scholarships are provided to facilitate participation and applications are welcomed from all young people who are interested in culture and development. There are no higher education requirements or specific work experience requirements. However, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have a genuine interest in the issues of culture and development, and have a fair command of English language. International Symposium on the Challenges in Heritage Tourism 24-26 September 2008

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION NOW 11 AUGUST!

SEAMEO-SPAFA is pleased to announce that it will convene an International Symposium on Heritage Tourism to be held 24-26 September 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand . Tourism continues to steadfastly increase in Southeast Asia and remains as a key income generator for most, if not all, Southeast Asian countries. As tourists, local as well as foreign, demand more from their vacation trips the rise in cultural excursions keeps gaining momentum. However, striving for a balance between economic gain, sustainable development that maintains as well as improves the quality of the destination, and beneficial social and community outcomes, does not happen by chance. There needs to be a concerted plan of action agreed upon by all key players involved. This Symposium aims to bring together those very key players in Southeast Asia so that they can discuss and debate on how to capitalize on management innovations and initiatives, strengthen partnerships and align common goals, promote further corporate and social responsibility, and finally, adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to heritage tourism. For information and registration, please click on the Symposium link on the left. Attendance is free but early registration is advised as places are limited.

3rd International Conference on Culture and Development: Channeling Real Change 26-28 November 2008

SEAMEO-SPAFA is pleased to announce that it will hold the 3rd International Conference on Culture and Development from 26-28 November 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the theme of Channeling Real Change. The inaugural conference was held in 2002 and later followed up with a 2nd conference held in 2005. Three years have passed since then and we are now ready to revisit the ongoing culture and development discourse by providing a platform for the presentation of individual experiences, new findings, and viewpoints. By encouraging public participation from across all sectors of society, the presentation of shared experiences and common understandings could prove to be the inspirational and motivating factors that can channel positive changes and encourage more pro-active engagement by all.
For more information and registration, please click on the Conference link on the left. No registration fee will be levied to attend this conference but early registration is advised.
