Summary of SESH #9: From Copyright to Creative Commons
SEAMEO SPAFA held its SPAFA SESH (number 9 in the series) on 16 December 2020. Titled ‘From Copyright to Creative Commons‘, it featured a conversation with Teerin Charoenpot, Intellectual Property lawyer, and Susannah Tantemsapya, Founder and Executive Director of Creative Migration and Bangkok 1899 with extensive experience in content creation.
The 1hr 45-minute discussion shared basic and general information on Copyright and Creative Commons licensing that helped viewers understand Copyright considerations, and to better manage creative resources in practice. The panelists shared their knowledge on how to determine and use copyrighted materials, as well as learn to allow use of their creative work under Creative Commons licences. Key talking points included what and who are protected by Copyright, the “fair use” exceptions, and how to use Creative Commons-licensed materials. In addition, the conversation also touched on the benefits of sharing resources with the wider community, and in appreciating the issues that can enhance the development and innovation of knowledge and creativity.
Viewers also participated in posting comments and questions, many concerning free and open sharing of OERs (open educational resources) – teaching, learning, and research materials that allow free use, adaptation, and distribution – which represent an essential part of SEAMEO’s commitment to support the region’s learning communities.
