Tales from the Paddy Fields: Southeast Asian Folktales on Rice Culture (Eng and Thai)

SEAMEO SPAFA supported the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th International Storytelling Festivals (Thailand) and promoted the heritage of rice culture (Spiritual Dimensions of Rice Culture in Southeast Asia 2015). In connecting these experiences, a publication has been produced and can serve as a resource material. The publication is both educational and entertaining for people of all ages and backgrounds, and promotes and increases appreciation for traditional ways of life and values. The sharing of folktales on rice culture can contribute to the promotion of cultural diversity and shared heritage in the Southeast Asian region. At the Huế Storytelling Festival for Primary School Children, held in 2017, assigned storytellers told tales about rice culture to a student-majority audience during a plenary session. The folktales were documented on video for archiving and dissemination purposes. Some illustrations from a drawing contest were collected and used for the story book’s design and layout.
