SEAMEO SPAFA joins the regional archaeology and heritage community in mourning the passing of Professor John N. Miksic (1946–2025) — a pioneering scholar whose work transformed our understanding of Southeast Asia’s past and Singapore’s early history.
Professor Miksic’s decades of teaching, research, and mentorship shaped generations of archaeologists and heritage professionals. His excavations and publications continue to illuminate the complexity of trade, urbanism, and cultural exchange in the region.
He shared a long and meaningful association with SEAMEO SPAFA:

as guest lecturer for “Urban Origins and Conservation in Singapore” (2011), part of SEAMEO SPAFA’s Southeast Asian Capitals’ Archaeology lecture series;

as Academic Committee member for the inaugural SPAFACON 2013; and
-
as a long-standing member of SEAMEO SPAFA’s Advisory Board, where his guidance and scholarship helped strengthen the Centre’s academic mission.
Professor Miksic’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of researchers dedicated to preserving Southeast Asia’s cultural heritage.
